Good lord I want one of these.

randallb:

This is Apple’s original AppleTV, from circa 1996. Rob Gould, who works on the AOL HD project with my company, Castfire, sent me these awesome pics from his time back at Bell Atlantic (now Verizon) when they had access to this box. He calls it the “Pippen”, likely a spin-off from the Apple Pippin, from earlier in the decade. He says:

When it boots, you see the Mac OS Finder on your TV and the inits start loading on the bottom of the screen.  It played video from MPEG1 streams at 1.544 mbps, which actually didn’t look bad at all in standard-def.

Rob’s work on AOL HD is the sort of stuff he thought this Apple TV box might have matured into. Fun to see how the circle goes, innit?

Apple TV discovered:
You all know I love Apple, but I have to be honest. This is only the second time I’ve seen an Apple TV in a home. Should I buy one when I upgrade my TV? Right now I’m strongly considering a Roku, but I also want to access Hulu and videos on my iMac (actually an external hard drive connected to my iMac). Perhaps a Mac Mini?
