SF Food Wars: Yeast Affliction:
I went to my first SF Food Wars event at Thirsty Bear. The theme was bread. Lots and lots of bread. Way too much bread for anyone to eat in one sitting. I was surprised by how well organized the event was. They limited the number of tickets to prevent an uncomfortably packed venue. Pretty rare. Some breads were delicious; some were… not. I highly recommend Thirsty Bear’s Golden Vanilla beer. Delicious.

How to get the Socialite badge on Foursquare:
I put together this Google Map as an itinerary to achieve the Socialite badge in San Francisco on Foursquare. It’s focused around the downtown Union Square area. It was an awesome night. When I got the badge the congratulatory message was: “Keep this up and you’re going to end up on Valleywag with Julia Allison.” Clever. The bars/hotels: Campton Place Hotel Clift Hotel’s Redwood Room Clock Bar Harry Denton’s Starlight Room Otis Rye The Ambassador Of course the list can change every day since anyone can add or remove tags to venues.maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&m… I also put together a map for the SOMA area:maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&m…

Square Up receipt from Sight Glass Coffee:
After swiping my credit card, I was asked to sign using the iPod Touch’s screen. I then had the option to email myself a receipt. Very Apple-esque. Note: I added the black rectangle to cover a few digits from my credit card number.www.squareup.com

The famous Sight Glass Coffee:
After all the buzz I’m thoroughly unimpressed. Apparently construction will be completed in February 2010. For now, if you want warmth and a place to sit, I recommend going to Blue Bottle Cafe.www.sightglasscoffee.com

Using my credit card at Sightglass Coffee:
This is the first time I’ve seen Jack Dorsey’s latest product: Square Up. The employee at Sight Glass Coffee used an iPod Touch with a little hardware accessory to accept my credit card. Very impressive.www.sightglasscoffee.comwww.squareup.com

Dad Would Be Disappointed

When I was young, my parents and I often had Sunday brunch at “The Hotel Restaurant” a.k.a. the Stanford Court Hotel in San Francisco. We would drive up from Hillsborough, eat brunch, and then walk around some small art galleries.

When my Dad moved out and took some time off from work, he continued to eat at the Stanford Court as a part of his weekday routine. He was always so proud of those years:

“Remember those times, Dave? I’d wake up, take you school, go back to sleep, wake up again, go to the gym, go eat at the Stanford Court, read six newspapers, and then pick you up from school.”

Yes, six newspapers. Every day. He was the most well-informed adult I knew for many years.

Yesterday I tried to take Amy to His old “Hotel Restaurant.” Sadly, it no longer exists. The parking valet did not understand the shattered look on my face. I tried to explain but I assume it sounded thoroughly corny.

Sorry, Dad. Your restaurant is gone.

Mid sip:
Aperture priority again. I’m in focus; the boat isn’t. My Canon G10 wins again.

Cup perspective:
Aperture priority. Part of my depth of field experiment. Turned out pretty cool. Light on one side; somehow less light on the other.
